Issue 08 · Google Play sheet

Mobile games, audited point by point.

Seven titles from Google Play. One checklist, applied to every one of them in the same order, on the same handsets, with the date written next to each figure. No shortlist by vibes.

01 · Method

The seven-point sheet

Every title below was taken through these steps in this order. A title that stalls on any point does not reach the catalogue, and the point where it stalled is written down.

  1. 01

    Listing check

The Google Play listing has to be live and open to Australian readers on the day we look, and the date of that check is written on the sheet. If the listing is taken down later, the entry is pulled rather than quietly edited.

  2. 02

    Install and first run

Installed on a mid-range Android handset and taken to the first playable screen. Anything that demands an account before you can look around is noted.

  3. 03

    Session log

At least forty minutes of play across two separate sittings, with a short note every ten minutes. One long sitting does not count.

  4. 04

    Advertising load

How often breaks interrupt play, whether they can be closed, and whether the game still behaves when personalised ads are declined.

  5. 05

    Permissions asked

What the app requests and whether the request matches what the game actually does on screen.

  6. 06

    Store record

Developer name, star rating and review count are copied from the Google Play listing, and the date of the copy is kept with them.

  7. 07

    Who it suits

Age fit, realistic session length and whether the title is usable offline on a train. Written plainly, not as a slogan.

Tuscany Garden gameplay: a restored farm plot with vegetable beds and a pond
Point 03 in practice: a session note taken ten minutes into Tuscany Garden, second sitting.

Trucker Ben gameplay: a side-view truck hauling a trailer under a steel bridge

    Trucker Ben - Truck Simulator

    Go Dreams

    4.336.2K reviews

A side-on haulage sim in chunky pixel art. You hitch a trailer, keep the load level over hills and dips, and watch fuel and damage on the way to the drop-off. Completed runs unlock a sturdier rig and longer routes.

Tuscany Garden gameplay: a stone cottage with a tiled roof surrounded by flowering plants

    Tuscany Garden-Farm&Adventure

    Lor-game

    4.411.6K reviews

A neglected Italian estate is handed to you overgrown. You clear beds, plant and harvest, rebuild the cottage room by room, and follow a light story between chores. Progress is slow by design and forgiving of short visits.

Cafe Tycoon gameplay: a pink street cafe with a sandwich sign above the counter

Cafe Tycoon – Cooking & Fun

    AppOn Innovate

    4.051K reviews

Counter service under time pressure: take orders, cook to the ticket, and keep the queue moving. Between shifts you hire staff, extend the menu and open new venues. Taps are short, so a shift fits a tram ride.

Chess Online gameplay: a wooden board mid-game with both player clocks running

    Chess Online

    Chess Friends

    4.4180.4K reviews

Straight chess against live opponents, with a rating that moves as you play, clocks from blitz upwards and a choice of board themes. Matchmaking is quick at Australian evening hours, which is where our sessions were logged.

Block Buster gameplay: coloured blocks stacked on a grid with numbered rows

    Block Buster - No Timer

    Lion Studios Plus

    4.319.1K reviews

A block-fitting puzzle with the clock removed, which is the whole point of it. Drag shapes onto the grid, clear full lines, and think for as long as you like. Boards can be put down mid-move and picked up hours later.

Parking Master 3D gameplay: a crowded car park seen from above with cars to untangle

    Parking Master 3D: Traffic Jam

    LIHUHU PTE. LTD.

    4.534.4K reviews

A jammed car park seen from above, and one sensible order in which everything can leave. Trace a path for each car, find the vehicle that has to move first, and clear the lot. Levels stay short; later ones need a plan before the first tap.

Coloring games for kids: picture cards of friendly animals ready to colour in
Coloring games for kids drawing app icon

Coloring games for kids: 2-5 y

Bebi Family: preschool learning games for kids

    4.433.7K reviews

Colouring for very small hands: tap a crayon, tap a shape, and the area fills without any need to stay inside the lines. Animals, vehicles and simple scenes, with no reading required and no fiddly menus between pictures.

06 · Questions

Put to the desk

07 · The desk

Who does the checking

A small editorial desk in Melbourne that reads Google Play listings for a living and prefers a filled-in sheet to an opinion.

  • Played on real handsets

Each title is installed on mid-range Android phones that a reader would plausibly own, never judged from a store page or a trailer alone.

  • The same sheet every time

Seven points, one order, no exceptions for a title we happen to like. The sheet is published above so you can hold us to it.

  • Figures carry a date

Star ratings and review counts are quoted with the day they were read, because a listing can look different a week later.

  • Corrections are welcome

If a note is wrong, write to the desk and it is fixed on the page, with the change recorded on the following sheet.

Trucker Ben session capture: the truck dashboard with fuel and load gauges
Session capture, point 03 — Trucker Ben, sitting two.
Cafe Tycoon session capture: the staff hiring screen with chef portraits
Session capture, point 04 — Cafe Tycoon, break frequency logged.
Coloring games for kids session capture: a duckling picture being filled with colour
Session capture, point 07 — the kids’ entry, handed to a four-year-old.

08 · Model

How this site works

Stated plainly, because a review desk that hides its arrangements is not worth reading.

  1. A

    Open to every reader

Every page, sheet and note can be read straight away, with no account and no wall in the way. Nothing on the site is held back for people on the alert list.

  2. B

    How the titles are chosen

Each cycle starts with a longlist read on Google Play, and every title on it is installed and played in the order it was logged. Only the ones that come through all seven points reach the catalogue; the rest stay on the sheet with the point that stopped them.

  3. C

    Who writes the entries

The same desk that plays the titles writes them up, from the session notes rather than the store description. The catalogue is re-read every cycle, roughly once a quarter, and a score is the desk’s own opinion, never a figure handed to it.

  4. D

    Placements are labelled

Where a link or block on these pages is an advertising placement, it is marked as such next to the item rather than buried in small print. No advertiser sees an entry before it is published, and a placement never changes a score or the order of the catalogue. The full wording is in the terms.
